No More Hand Weeding – Meri-Lapin Kiinteistöpalvelut Oy Improved Efficiency with Eco Weedkiller

Meri-Lapin Kiinteistöpalvelut Oy provides property maintenance services, as its name suggests, in the Meri-Lappi region as well as in Rovaniemi. The company’s services include, among other things, cleaning of yards and parking areas, snow removal, lawn mowing, and a 24/7 on-call service. In addition, the company is responsible for maintaining heating systems, including inspection visits and meter readings, and also carries out renovation work when needed.

"Our customers are mainly housing companies and commercial properties,” says Jani Kallinen, owner of Meri-Lapin Kiinteistöpalvelut Oy.

Weeds between paving stones caused a headache

The idea to acquire the Eco Weedkiller hot water unit arose from a practical need.

"We had a project where we needed a faster and more efficient alternative to hand weeding weeds growing between paving stones. While searching online, I came across Eco Weedkiller devices, and we arranged a demonstration. I decided to purchase the machine for our own use,” Jani explains.

The machine is used as part of the company’s property maintenance services, but weed and invasive species control is also offered as a separate service.

"We already have a lot of experience in controlling invasive species, especially lupine. Last summer we treated a large area in Haparanda as a commissioned project, and the feedback on the results has been entirely positive."

In Haparanda, Meri-Lapin Kiinteistöpalvelut Oy acted as a contractor in the BB-Alien project coordinated by the County Administrative Board of Norrbotten. This is a three-year joint project between Finland and Sweden, aiming to combat invasive species in cooperation with the Swedish Hunters’ Association, LUKE, and Metsähallitus.

Weed removal, washing and drain opening with the same machine

In addition to paved areas, the machine has been used in outdoor maintenance to remove weeds from around building foundations and fences. In the case of shops and other public outdoor spaces, it is a major advantage that the method is chemical-free and therefore safe for animals and children.

“In addition to weed control, we also use the Eco Weedkiller for washing purposes. The combination of hot water and pressure washing is very effective. We use the machine to wash, for example, fueling areas at service stations, waste containers at stores, and shopping carts. Next winter, we also plan to use the machine for melting ice in courtyards as well as thawing and opening drains. The machine came with a drain-opening nozzle designed for all kinds of thawing and clearing tasks.”

An efficient and ergonomic solution

Only 2–3 litres of water per square metre are required for weed control, and 3–5 litres for deep-rooted plants. The Pro10 unit’s 400-litre water tank is sufficient to treat approximately 40 square metres at a time. The machine produces water at a rate of 10 litres per minute, allowing work to progress quickly.

“I will never hand-weed again unless it’s absolutely necessary. With the Eco Weedkiller, the work is easy, ergonomic, and takes only a fraction of the time compared to manual weeding. In addition, the result is more durable, as the hot water destroys the roots as well. After treatment, we remove the dead plant matter within a week. Depending on the site, the treatment is repeated 2–3 times during the growing season,” Jani explains.

Hot water – but not steam

Kimmo Kärki, who is responsible for product development at Eco Weedkiller, explains why the method used in the machine is so effective.

“In order for the roots of the plant to die as a result of high thermal energy, the water must retain a temperature close to 100°C all the way down to the roots. The water produced by Eco Weedkiller machines is always 100 degrees Celsius, and the large droplet size ensures that heat is transferred efficiently to the roots. There must be enough water so that the thermal energy it carries is sufficient to destroy the roots, but not too much, so that water is not wasted unnecessarily,” Kärki clarifies.

Meri-Lapin Kiinteistöpalvelut Oy is an excellent example of how the Eco Weedkiller hot water system can combine environmental friendliness, efficiency, and versatility as part of modern property maintenance.
